The Project Charter

A Project Charter is the short, signed document that defines a project before work begins: objective, success criteria, scope and out-of-scope, assumptions, stakeholders, and how decisions get made. It is the single thing the sponsor and team agree on so everyone starts with the same definition of done.

The charter is the antidote to the most common way projects fail: starting without a shared, written definition of success. It forces the hard conversations, what is in scope, who owns what, what happens when things go sideways, before they become expensive.

Fifty1 produces a signed Project Charter as part of every Initiate engagement, alongside the Stakeholder Register, Risk Register, and Communication Plan.

What a charter contains
  • Objective + success criteria
  • Scope and out-of-scope
  • Assumptions + constraints
  • Stakeholders and RACI
  • Decision + meeting cadence
Who signs the charter?
The project sponsor. The signature is the commitment that the scope and success criteria are agreed before work starts.

All engagements are flat-fee, no hourly surprises.
